Fred was born May 22, 1923 to Hans and Edith (Anderson) Hanson in Long Creek, Oregon, on a ranch that was homesteaded by his parents who came from Denmark. He was the youngest of three children and the only one that lived. Fred and his father became partners on the ranch until his dad's passing in 1973. During that time, they raised numerous cattle and sheep. Fred was not fond of the sheep. He always said that was his dad's preference, he preferred the cattle.
He was married to Velma “June” Best for 52 years and together they had four children. They began their lives together on the Fox Ranch, moving later to a ranch in Mitchell, then on to Unity and John Day area. Eventually after retirement they purchased a home in Prineville
After the passing of his wife June, Fred was fortunate to meet a wonderful lady, Mary Ann Tooley. Mary Ann and her family became an important part of his life. For ten years they were great companions. They enjoyed taking trips and spending time together until her passing.
He enjoyed working on the ranch, fishing, reading, playing pinochle, attending church at the First Assembly of God, spending time with his family and friends. Fred loved and lived life to the fullest and was known for his contagious smile, kindness, sweet spirit, integrity, honesty and work ethic. He was an amazing man and loved by all who knew him.
