Evelyn was born the youngest of seven children to Fred Schlichting and Opal Lorraine (nee Allen) Schlichting. Her older siblings were Rosemary Hertz, Ernest “Ernie” Schlichting, Raymond Schlichting, Patricia “Pat” Robertson, Louis Schlichting, and Willard Schlichting.
She was married and divorced three times. Her husbands were: Gary Jack Cross, Leon Johnson, and Truman Plummer.
Evelyn had three daughters: Julie Cross, Donna Hamlin, and Sheila Plummer. She commented as to how very proud she was of each of her daughters.
Evelyn was born and raised in Prineville. Her first job as a teenager was at Tastee Treet. She also worked as a store clerk, a waitress, and other various odd jobs to help make ends meet.
She lived in Montana for a time, and while she was there, she co-owned and managed a mercantile, she studied for her real estate license and then she later earned a bachelor’s degree in social work. When she later moved back to Oregon, she worked as a manager for a women’s shelter for a time.
She had big gardens and canned her own foods. She was resourceful and thrifty and she was good at making her humble homes comfortable, with meager means. She enjoyed making zucchini bread for friends and family. She always loved her houseplants and outdoor flowers.
Evelyn wrote lovely poetry that told of her deep, abiding love and faith for her Lord and Savior. Her poems also spoke of her love and kindness for her family, and of her deep appreciation for time spent with friends.
She loved sending and receiving cards and letters for birthdays, Christmas and everyday occasions.
She died peacefully at Pioneer Memorial Hospital with loved ones at her side.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, each of her siblings, and her daughter Julie. She is survived by her daughters Donna (Chris), and Sheila (Jea), grandchildren Sarina and Jamie, Bejamin, Elizabeth, Jade, Katelyn and Hannah and great-grandchildren Sadie and Amelia, Brandon and Sahailie, and Graham and Cora.
She was dearly loved by family and friends who will miss her deeply.
Arrangements were made by Whispering Pines
She will be interred with her parents.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a slightly later time.
