Fred John Schaumloeffel was born on September 9, 1940 to Paula Schaumloeffel (Kruse) and Frederick Schaumloeffel at Astoria General Hospital in the borough of Queens, New York. As an only child, he grew up playing the accordion, collecting stamps and collecting baseball cards. While a student at Grover Cleveland High School, he played on his school’s soccer team, performed as a lead singer in his school’s production of Oklahoma, and developed his skills as a budding photographer.
At the age of sixteen, Fred attended Word of Life Christian Camp in Schroon Lake where he first laid his eyes on a twenty-year old Italian girl from the Lower East Side named Gloriann. At the age of seventeen, Fred was invited by his pastor to attend one of the Billy Graham Crusade meetings being held in New York City. In June, 1957 Fred went forward to receive Christ as his Savior and Lord following Dr. Graham’s invitation at Forest Hills Tennis Stadium.
Following this lifechanging decision, Fred’s romance with Gloriann blossomed and they were engaged in 1961 on Easter Sunday. Fred then entered the Navy, beginning at Pensacola Naval Training Center in Florida. He returned to marry his bride on September 23, 1961 in Forest Hills, New York. They honeymooned at a Dude Ranch in Grant, Colorado and then set up a new life in San Diego, California where he continued his military service. Following an honorable discharge as Petty Officer-Second Class, Fred and Gloriann relocated to Santa Monica, California and then years later to Canyon Country, California. In 1967 their first son, Glen was born followed seven years later by Clifford in 1974. In 1990 Fred and Gloriann moved to Sequim, Washington where they enjoyed some of their best years with dear friends. In 2005, they moved to Bend, Oregon to be closer to family. Fred was a lifelong fan of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Kings, New York Rangers, and UCLA Bruins.
Fred’s vocational career spanned many different employments: photographer, insurance agent, small business owner, social worker, realtor, and customer support representative. More importantly was his service to people through the many churches he and Gloriann attended: West Los Angeles Baptist Church (baptized here), Evangelical Free Church of the Canyons, Grace Community Church, Sequim Bible Church, Bible Fellowship Church, Grace Baptist Church, and Community Bible Church at Sunriver. His ministries included youth leader, international student outreach, fellowship group leader, music leader, groundskeeper, Sunday School teacher, deacon, elder and missions committee member.
Fred was a thoughtful son to his parents, a devoted husband of over 60 years, a loving father who encouraged his sons in all their endeavors, and a grandfather who was immensely proud of his grandchildren’s accomplishments. Fred lived his life with a compassionate heart for others and a desire to honor God in all of life’s circumstances. His favorite verse was Romans
8:28- “And we know that God causes all things to work together for good, for those who love God, and to those who are called according to His purpose.”
He is survived by his wife, Gloriann of Bend, Oregon, his son Glen (Nancie) of Bozeman, Montana, his son CJ (Terri) of Kihei, Hawaii, and his grandchildren, Jonathan of Irvine, California, Janea of Dallas, Texas, Jacob of Lakewood, Colorado, Keegan and Makena of Valencia, California
