John McGhee Alston Jr., 90, of Prineville passed away Tuesday, August 11, 2021, at his residents. There will be a graveside service Thursday, August 19, 2021, at 10:00 am at the Juniper Haven Cemetery (1555 N Main Street- Prineville) Minister John Robinson retired from Powell Butte Community Church will be officiating.
John was born on August 23, 1930, to John and Alice (Lambert) Alston in Severn, North Carolina. He attended high school at Fork Union Military Academy in the late 1940s. After graduating high school John worked as a farmhand in Virginia. Then he enlisted into the Marine Corps. in 1950 through 1952.
While John was in the Marines he fought in the North Korean war. He then received a Purple Heart Medal, Korean Service Medal with 1 star, along with receiving United Nations Service Medal.
After leaving the Marine Corps John went to college. John received a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Nevada and later received his Masters from Whitworth University in Spokane, Washington. He became a teacher and spent his time educating our young people.
John had some hobbies to keep him busy like horseback riding, writing poetry, and short stories. He was known to be an avid book reader and enjoyed studying the scripture from the bible.
He is preceded in death by his wife Dorothy (Roe) Alston.
John is survived by his sister-in-law Mary Lee Fisher of Virginia, cousin JoAnne Fisher of Virginia, and nephew Earl Lumpkins of Oregon.
