LeRoy "Roy" Schapler Obituary

LeRoy “Roy” Matthew Schapler, 88, of Prineville passed away on Friday July 5, 2019.  There will be no formal services at this time.

Roy was born on February 12, 1931 in Chicago, Illinois to Earl and Edna (Quinn) Schapler.  He attended Blaine Elementary School and Lane Tech High School in Chicago.

After school, he traveled around the country, often catching rides on military aircraft while serving in the Civil Air Patrol.  He settled on the west coast and worked various jobs including smoke jumping for the Forest Service.  He married and had three children.  The family moved to Portland, Oregon in 1955 where he went to school to become a journeyman oil burner serviceman, his profession until he retired in 1993.

He had many hobbies and enjoyed them greatly.  He skied, sailed, parachuted, piloted his own airplane, and was an active member of the Oregon Trail Club.  Roy was an avid collector of World War II memorabilia and books.  He loved nature and history.

Roy was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his son Robert Schapler and Janet Warner of Alexandria, Virginia, daughters; Cindy Chance and Greg Richter, Linda and Tom Nehls all of Prineville, Oregon, step-daughter; Lori and Greg Merritt of Vancouver, Washington, brother Lyle (Bud) Schapler of Merrillville, Indiana and sister Carol Masonberg of Chicago, Illinois, as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Roy was a wonderful man and loved by all who knew him.  He will be greatly missed.
