Paul Smith Obituary

Paul Frank “Towhead” Smith, 97, longtime Prineville resident, died on September 27, 2023. He was born on November 21, 1925 in Truth Arkansas, to Jasper Franklin Smith and Nancy
Susann “Annie” Horine Smith. He grew up on his family farm in Madison County, Arkansas. He enlisted in the US Army in March 1944, then discharged in April 1946. He received the European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with 2 Bronze Stars, World War ll Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and 2 Overseas Bars.

After discharging from the military he returned home, then traveled to the West coast. He moved to Oregon in 1947 where he worked in Mitchell, Oregon. This is where he got the nickname Towhead. He met and married Mary Helms in 1951, they married in Nevada. They later moved to Prineville, Oregon, where they started their family and he worked in the logging industry. They both later started their own logging company, P & M Logging in the early 1980’s. They both retired from the logging industry in the early 1990’s. He continued to work small jobs to keep himself busy, he enjoyed working. When not working he enjoyed hunting in Mitchell with his sons and grandsons. He enjoyed fishing, hunting for mushrooms, and rockhounding. He spent hours in his garden and yard, he loved the outdoors.

Survivors include his children; his son and daughter in-law, Merl and Karen Smith of Prineville; his daughter, Paula Smith of Prineville; his son and daughter in-law, Robert and Leslie Smith of Redmond; and his son, James Smith of Prineville. He had 11 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, and 10 great-great grandchildren. Services will be held at a later date at West Branch Cemetery in Mitchell, Oregon.
